New Moon begins when Edward’s family throws a party for Bella’s eighteenth birthday. Unlike her classmates, Bella has been dreading this milestone because once she turns eighteen, she is officially older than her beloved Edward who is seventeen and will remain so forever. While opening presents, Bella cuts her finger and the smell of human blood sends the vampires into frenzy. Jasper, the newest vampire to take up the non-human diet, attacks because he cannot control himself. This causes Edward to jump in between to save Bella. As a result, Edward becomes increasingly distant and eventually decides he is too dangerous to be around Bella and makes the heart-wrenching decision to move away. Edward tells Bella that he is leaving forever, thinking it is the best for her so she can have a normal life. When Edward lies and convinces her that he does not love her anymore, it destroys Bella.

For months, Bella lives her life in a zombie-like and depressed trance. Bella’s father, Charlie is worried about her because she goes through the day-to-day routines without thought and never socializing with anyone. Bella only resurfaces after drowning in pain for months when Charlie threatens to send her to a psychologist or to live with her mother. To please Charlie, Bella eventually goes to the movies with Jessica. While walking at night, Bella sees a group of drunken men and approaches them, remembering when Edward saved her from them. As she walks closer, Bella hears Edward’s voice in her head telling her not to do anything stupid.

Bella later discovers that when she is doing anything reckless and stupid she hears Edward’s voice subconsciously. While driving one day, Bella sees two run-down motorcycles alongside the road that the owner gives her free of charge. Thinking of her Native American friend, Bella takes the motorcycles to Jacob Black who fixes them up for her. Bella finds that the motorcycles are a perfect stupid thing to do to hear Edward’s voice again. Bella starts to get a life back while spending a lot of time with Jacob in La Push, whose inhabitants loathe vampires for reasons that become increasingly clearer as their friendship deepens. Eventually Bella learns that Jacob and a group of other males in the Quileute tribe have become werewolves.

In order to hear Edward’s voice, Bella jumps off a cliff and Jacob saves her from nearly drowning. However, Alice saw Bella jumping in a vision and thinks Bella is dead. Heart-broken, Edward rushes to Italy to provoke the Volturi, a powerful vampire family, trying to get them to kill him. Alice and Bella rush to Italy to save Edward, arriving just in time to stop him. Before leaving Italy, the Volturi tell Edward that Bella is a human who knows that vampires exist, must either be killed or transformed into a vampire. Reuinted, Edward tells Bella that he has always loved her and only left to protect her. She forgives him and to Edward’s dismay the Cullens vote in favor of Bella being turned into a vampire. However, Edward gives Bella a choice: either she lets Carlisle change her after her graduation or, if Bella agrees to marry him, he will change her himself. Edward promises to always look after her, especially because Victoria has come back to avenger her mate, James. The Cullens move back to Forks and everything goes back to normal.
