The novel begins with a note from Jacob to Bella in which he tries to explain how complicated their relationship is and that although he misses her a lot, it “doesn’t change anything.” Charlie blames Edward for Bella’s deep depression in New Moon and makes it clear that he no longer likes Edward and wishes that Bella would hang out a variety of other people. While Edward and Bella fill out college applications, Bella tells Edward of her desire to see her friend, Jacob, again. Although Edward fears for her safety, Bella insist that neither Jacob nor the rest of his werewolf pack would harm her and begins to visit him occasionally. There news of Seattle being plagued by a series of unsolved murders, which Edward suspects are being caused by a newborn vampire that is unable to control its thirst. Meanwhile, Alice has a vision that Victoria who is hunting Bella to avenge her mate, James, has returned to Forks. During a visit to La Push, Jacob expresses his love for Bella and forcefully kisses her against her will. Bella is unable to resist against his strength and when he stops, she punches him as hard as she can, but she only manages to break her hand. When Bella returns home and Edward learns of what happened, he threatens Jacob. Jacob tells Edward what occurred and they finally agree to work in unison to deal with Victoria. Later that night, Bella expresses her desire to have Edward make love to her before turning her into a vampire. Edward initially refuses, explaining that he could very easily kill her, but eventually after realizing how much it means to Bella, he agrees to try in the future as long as they are married first. Despite her aversion to marriage and her worry of what people will say and think if she marries at such a young age, Bella realizes that spending eternity with Edward is more important to her than anything else is and accepts his proposal. Bella realizes that some of her possessions have been stolen in order to track her. Bella and the Cullens realize that an army of newborn vampires controlled by Victoria is committing the murders in Seattle. The Cullen family joins forces with the werewolf pack in order to combat this threat. Bella, worried that Edward will be harmed asks him to stay away from the fight. As everyone else prepares for the upcoming battle, Bella and Edward camp in the mountains. They are later joined by Jacob and Seth Clearwater, a young member of the werewolf pack. In the freezing cold weather, Bella enters a state of hypothermia and in order to keep her warm, Jacob gets into the sleeping bag with her. Bella pretends to be asleep and eavesdrops on a conversation between Edward and Jacob. Jacob confesses his feelings toward Bella to Edward. The next morning, Edward and Bella discuss their engagement. Meanwhile, Jacob who was hiding and eavesdropping on their conversation lets out hurt howl of pain and leaves quickly before they can catch him. Bella asks Edward to go and find Jacob and upon their return, Edward leaves to allow Bella and Jacob the opportunity to speak. Jacob threatens to get himself killed by joining the conflict and blackmails her into kissing him. Bella agrees, they kiss, and she realizes that she has feelings for Jacob but she is in love with Edward more. Edward returns, having overheard the entire conversation. He explains that he is not angry with Bella for having such strong feelings for Jacob, a fact that makes Bella feel even more miserable than she was before. The newborn vampires attack and the combined werewolf and vampire force completely destroy the inexperienced newborns. Victoria had a plan though. During the battle, she tracks Edward’s scent to where they are hidden in the mountain, alongside a newborn named Riley. A fight ensues in which Riley is killed by Seth and Victoria is killed by Edward. Bella watches the entire scene, causing Edward to worry about her feelings towards him after seeing him as the unstoppable killing machine he is. Bella, however, is unperturbed as she loves him and cares for his safety. The Volturi arrives to tidy things up and Edward is reminded of his agreement to turn Bella into a vampire. Bella visits Jacob who was injured in the fight. She explains to Jacob that while she loves him, her love for Edward is far greater than anyone else alive and she hasn’t the will or desire to live another day without him around. Bella later speaks with Edward who tells her they do not have to marry and that Bella can have her way without completing her wishes. Bella states that she wishes to do things Edward’s way and they agree to continue with the wedding first. When Jacob receives a wedding invitation from Edward, he runs away in his wolf form to escape his pain and broken heart at Bella’s decision to become a vampire. Written by Ashley aka wolf |
